Helene G. Brenner, Ph.D.
Licensed Psychologist and Certifying Focusing Coordinator
Dr. Helene Brenner has spent more than thirty years helping people find their way back to themselves. As a licensed psychologist, Certifying Coordinator, and internationally recognized trainer in Focusing-Oriented Therapy (FOT), she brings a rare depth of experience to her work with clients, supervisees, and the therapists and coaches she trains.
Helene’s journey with Focusing began in 1992, when she became a certified Focusing trainer. Since then, she has devoted her career to mastering and teaching Inner Relationship Focusing—a gentle yet powerful approach that helps people access their body’s wisdom, heal old wounds, and reconnect with their authentic selves. She is also certified in EMDR and Level 2 in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), integrating these modalities into a rich, multimodal therapeutic approach.
As a trainer, Helene has shaped the field of Focusing-Oriented Therapy on multiple continents. She has led two-year certification programs in FOT and Inner Relationship Focusing sponsored by The Focusing Institute and the Washington Focusing Center, collaborated with the Somatic Experiencing Focusing-Oriented Therapy program, and taught extensively through Focusing Resources and The Focusing Institute Learning Community. Her workshops for certifying coordinators and trainers have reached professionals across the United States, Europe Israel, and Mexico. In 2017, she served as co-chair of the 3rd Annual International Conference of Focusing-Oriented Therapists.
Today, Helene joins with her life partner and colleague Larry Letich to lead live, interactive 10-month FOT Certification Programs via Zoom—intensive trainings designed for therapists and coaches who want to deepen their clinical skills and bring the transformative power of Focusing into their practice. These programs draw on decades of clinical wisdom, offering participants not just techniques but a way of being with clients that changes everything.
Helene is the author of I Know I’m in There Somewhere: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner Voice and Living a Life of Authenticity (Penguin, 2003), a book that has helped thousands of readers reconnect with what matters most. She has presented at renowned centers including Omega Institute, Kripalu Center, and the Washington National Cathedral.
Those who work with Helene—whether as clients, supervisees, or students—consistently describe her as warm, compassionate, and remarkably attuned. She has a gift for getting to the heart of what’s happening, while creating the safety people need to find their own voice and their own way forward.
Larry Letich, LCSW-C
Licensed Clinical Social worker and Focusing orientd Therapist and Certifying Focusing Coordinator
Larry Letich has spent fifty years exploring the inner landscape of human thoughts and emotions—and the outer terrain of human relationships. As a licensed clinical social worker, certified Focusing trainer and coordinator, and Certifying Coordinator for Focusing-Oriented Therapy, he brings half a century of clinical wisdom to his work with clients, couples, and the therapists and coaches he trains.
Larry’s roots go back to the pioneers—great teachers and leaders in psychology who were helping people live according to their innermost authentic selves before it was fashionable. It was from these mentors that he first learned the relationship skills he still teaches today: skills that make it possible to express all your authentic feelings, even the difficult ones, in ways that bring you and your partner closer together rather than further apart.
Two decades into his career, Larry discovered Focusing—especially Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF)—and recognized it as the most powerful, transformative, yet gentle self-awareness and emotional healing approach he had ever encountered. He became a certified Focusing trainer and has since led or co-led scores of trainings, workshops, and presentations on Focusing, IRF, and Focusing-Oriented Therapy throughout the United States and internationally, including Mexico, Europe, and Israel.
What distinguishes Larry’s work is his dedication to bringing FOT to populations often considered difficult to reach. He has developed specialized approaches for men with low interoceptive and emotional awareness, adults in recovery from substance abuse, and adults with ADHD—a topic on which he is a recognized expert. His ability to adapt Focusing for people who might initially seem disconnected from their inner experience has expanded the reach of this work in important ways.
Larry is also certified in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), which he integrates with his Focusing work to help couples move from conflict and disconnection to secure, emotionally attuned relationships.
Today, Larry partners with his colleague Dr. Helene Brenner to lead live, interactive 10-month FOT Certification Programs via Zoom—intensive trainings for therapists and coaches who want to deepen their clinical skills and bring the transformative power of Focusing into their practice. Together, they co-led the two-year FOT certification program sponsored by The Focusing Institute and the Washington Focusing Center, and continue to shape the next generation of Focusing-Oriented therapists.
